Hip pain is commonly caused by a variety of issues and is very often related to back pain. One of the most frequent causes is osteoarthritis, a condition in which the cartilage that cushions the hip joint wears down over time, leading to pain and stiffness. Another common cause is muscle or tendon strains, particularly in the muscles surrounding the hip, such as the hip flexors or glutes. These injuries can occur from overuse, poor posture or sudden movements.
Hip pain can also result from hip labral tears, where the cartilage that forms a cup around the hip joint is damaged. This is often caused by trauma or repetitive motion. Additionally, conditions such as herniated discs in the lower back can refer pain to the hip area, making it feel like the pain originates from the hip joint itself.
Hip pain is common because the hip is a weight-bearing joint subjected to constant movement and stress. As people age, the risk of developing hip problems increases due to wear and tear. Additionally, sedentary lifestyles, poor posture and repetitive physical activities can contribute to the development of hip pain at any age.
If you haven’t been able to stop your hip pain, it could be due to several reasons. One common issue is that the root cause of the pain may not have been accurately identified. Hip pain can arise from multiple sources, including muscle imbalances, joint dysfunction, or underlying conditions like osteoarthritis. Without a clear diagnosis, treatments may target only the symptoms, offering temporary relief instead of addressing the underlying cause. Additionally, many people rely on generic treatments, such as over-the-counter pain relievers or stretching, which may provide short-term comfort but fail to resolve the issue in the long run.
Failing to address hip pain can also limit your ability to stay active, affecting your overall quality of life. Chronic pain and reduced mobility may result in further health issues, such as muscle atrophy, poor posture and even depression. Early intervention is crucial to prevent these long-term consequences.
In terms of treatment, our approach depends on your individual specific case, but generally, we work to restore function of the hip joint. This may include spinal adjustments to improve mobility, which can help decompress the joint and reduce pain. We also use mobilization techniques to gently move the hip joint in different directions, improving its range of motion and addressing any restrictions.
Additionally, we target trigger points in the muscles around the hip, as these can cause referred pain and limit movement. By releasing tension in these areas, we help the muscles relax and restore normal function. Incorporating stretches is another key component of treatment, as it helps increase flexibility and improves the overall function of the hip muscles.
We also focus on strengthening the muscles around the hip joint to enhance stability. Weak muscles can contribute to instability and increase the risk of further injury, so targeted exercises are crucial. These exercises are designed to build strength gradually and restore proper movement patterns.
In some cases, there may be an underlying pelvic or low back issue contributing to the hip pain. In such cases, we also work on these areas to address any imbalances or dysfunctions that might be affecting the hip. Ultimately, the goal is to restore normal function to the hip joint and ensure that the surrounding muscles are strong enough to support it properly, reducing pain and improving movement.
